Bank of America statement to Excel

A Bank of America statement lists deposits, withdrawals, checks and fees in separate sections, each with its own total. This tool reads the bank's PDF, turns every line into a spreadsheet row, and checks that the rows carry the beginning balance to the ending balance printed on the first page. Everything runs in your browser.

Downloading the PDF from Bank of America

In Online Banking, open the account and go to its statements and documents area (Bank of America labels the tab along the lines of "Statements & Documents"). Choose the statement month and download it as PDF. If the account is set to paperless, the same statements are there; paperless only changes whether a paper copy is mailed. The bank keeps several years available online, so 12 or 24 months for a lender is a matter of downloading one file per month. In the mobile app, the account's menu has a statements entry with the same files, though a computer is quicker for a batch.

If your checking and savings are printed on one combined statement, a lender will still want them treated as separate accounts. Where the bank offers a statement per account, download those; it also makes the balance check below unambiguous.

Why the bank's own PDF matters here

The downloaded PDF has a text layer: the dates, descriptions and amounts are stored as text, and the tool reads them directly. A scan or a photo of the paper statement does not have one, and scanned statements are not supported yet. Printing the online transaction list to PDF is also a poor substitute, because it lacks the printed beginning and ending balances that make the check below possible, and its descriptions are often shorter than the statement's.

What the tool extracts

Bank of America groups transactions by kind: deposits and other additions, withdrawals and other subtractions, checks, and service fees, each section with a subtotal that matches the account summary on page one. The tool reads the text layer of the PDF and works from the column headings and the positions of the amounts on each page, so additions become credits and subtractions, checks and fees become debits, with a running balance where the statement prints one. The description keeps the bank's wording: the merchant name, the card ending, the transaction date inside the description, the check number for checks. Categories are added from that wording; checks land in Everything else unless you assign a category, which then applies to every check with the same description.

The parser is built around how statements are laid out in general rather than around a list of banks, and has been checked against public sample PDFs from banks and synthetic statements, not against the range of real Bank of America statements (business accounts, combined statements, older formats). The balance check is what tells you whether yours came through complete.

Check the reconciliation line

Under the rows, the tool reports how many of your statements add up: beginning balance, plus every credit it found, minus every debit, compared with the ending balance. A Bank of America statement also prints a subtotal for each section, which gives you a second check by hand: if a row from the checks section were missed, the tool's total would be off by exactly that check. If a statement is reported as not adding up, look at its page count first (a dropped page is the usual reason), then at any row with an unusual amount, and use the rating buttons under the table to tell us what kind of error you saw. Only the category of error is sent, never the statement.

Export to Excel

Export Excel writes an .xlsx file; Export CSV writes a comma-separated file that Excel opens correctly. Columns: Date, Description, Category, Debit, Credit, Balance, Statement, Page. Because deposits and withdrawals are separate numeric columns, a SUM of each reproduces the "total deposits and other additions" and "total withdrawals and other subtractions" figures from the statement summary, which is a quick second check.

Questions

How many months can I drop at once? Up to 24. Drop them together and the rows are sorted by date across all of them; the Statement column says which file each row came from.

Does it read Bank of America credit card statements? It reads them as text PDFs, with charges as debits and payments or credits as credits. The lender view, which treats credits as deposits, does not apply to a card; use it on the checking account.

The PDF is password-protected. Not supported. Remove the password by opening the file in a PDF viewer and saving a copy without one.

Is anything uploaded? No. The statement is read on your computer by your browser and never sent to this site or anyone else. The privacy page describes the one content-free usage event that is recorded.

Other banks: Chase, Wells Fargo, Capital One, American Express. The converter page describes the columns and limits in general.
